ISOCAM - ISO's Infrared Camera

This is a picture of ISOCAM. It is like two very small cameras, each sensitive to a different band of infrared wavelength.

Although each half can only record a 32x32 sized picture, the observer can choose how big an area this can cover. The largest size is just over the size of the largest crater on the Moon. The smaller the area the image covers, the more detailed information we have on that area.

ISOCAM detectors can only record the brightness of what they are seeing. It is like taking a black and white photograph. However, each detector has a set of filters which the observer can use to record light of the infrared colour he wants. He could get several pictures in different colours and add them to produce the equivalent of a colour picture.

ISOCAM produced many of the exciting images found in this tour. This is a picture of Cassiopeia A. It was a massive star which blew up, giving this shell of gas and dust. This type of explosion is the source of many of the elements from which we are made.
