Saturn's Moons

List of Moons

Saturn currently has 47 known moons. When Cassini-Huygens was launched in 1997 there were only 18 known moons. Reanalysis of data from the Voyager 2 spacecraft has led to these further discoveries and recently another 12 minor moons were following studies at the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii.

11 May 2005 Update
A small new moon has been found orbiting within the Keeler gap in Saturn's A ring. The object is temporarily designated S/2005 S1 and was found to be roughly 7 kilometres across. The moon's gravitation influences the edges of the Keeler gap where the ring material is seen to form wavy patterns.

9 September 2004
A small new found object, temporarily designated S/2004 S3, has been seen orbiting Saturn's outer F ring. The tiny object orbits the planet at a distance of approximately 141 000 kilometres from Saturn's center. Its nature, moon or clump, is not presently known. Two other possible moon candidate objects S/2004 S4 and S/2004 R1 have also been identified, but are not yet confirmed as moons.

16 August 2004
Two new moons have been discovered orbiting between Mimas and Enceladus. The moons are approximately 3 kilometres and 4 kilometres across. The moons, located 194 000 kilometres and 211 000 kilometres from the planet's centre, are between the orbits of two other saturnian moons, Mimas and Enceladus. They are provisionally named S/2004 S1 and S/2004 S2. One of them, S/2004 S1, may be an object spotted in a single image taken by NASA's Voyager spacecraft 23 years ago, called at that time S/1981 S14.
